Tower BridgeWell this was a rather more interesting outing and a bit longer. All the way from Thames Ditton to Gravesend, hoping to catch the same tide conditions as we will on the day. So meeting at DSPC just before midnight, getting everything ready and go!

Fantastic water, not a ripple until we were well through London! We met our support boat at Teddington, and they followed us all the way down. Thank you John, Neil & Malcolm. On through Richmond lock, and as we went through Isleworth in the small hours there was a couple having an argument that we overheard for some minutes. It wasn’t completely dark - the reflected light off the low cloud gave quite a lot of detail on the bank and we could look at the water flowing round bridges and piles in the river to gain a feel for the tide.Thames Barrier - Woolwich

Down through into central London, past the Belfast and Tower Bridge. All wonderful sights with great night time views. Well it gives us something to look at. We stopped at the dome and had bacon buttees. Very nice, but there was no tomato ketchup on mine! We overtook a yacht motoring down the river. Then soon after I was in the forward cabin and couldn’t see very much as we went through the Thames barrier and onwards. You can see us just in front of the yacht which has caught up a bit. Some wonderful views of scrap heaps if you are into that sort of thing, but not much else.

Finally we arrived at Gravesend at 08.15. John Ball dropped Neil & Malcolm off and then scooted away in Ottilia back up to his berth at St .Catherine’s dock. That left us with an interesting challenge in the falling tide to recover Sgian Dubh from the water - we ended up lifting over the end of the jetty and carrying all the way up to the bank. A quick shower, and thanks again to Gravesend Rowing club for helping us here. Tow the boat home and then a quick snack and snooze and in time to watch the rugby. Oh dear England. I had reckoned you would win by 3 points.

Chris Millward

Chris is the Financial Controller for National Boat Shows Ltd. Generally very quiet and mild mannered, but he seems to undergo a personality transformation when in a boat, which leads to high class results but erratic means. Keen to make an impression at record setting. We’re keeping our eyes on that.

Notable achievements:

  • Humming
