Saturday March 20th 2004

Thursday night: the boys had loaded the boat onto the trailer.

Saturday 20th March

06.00 meet at the club.  Everybody arrives within a 3 minute window.

06.45 trailer pulled up the car and attached, all ancillary equipment and supplies loaded. This includes sleeping bags for those not rowing, tea & coffee, fuel (otherwise known as sandwiches, doughnuts, etc., GPS, schedule.

Drive to Maidenhead rowing club. Unload everything.

You can just see Chris in the forward cabin, well wrapped up in a sleeping bag. There’s another sleeping bag for the cox, and both have an outer orange plastic bag to keep them dry (er).

07.30 ready to go. Boat & kit unloaded, supplies on board, blades greased (done every outing, or couple of hours as the leather cuff on the oar rotates in a metal rollock), last minute preparations in the club house, work out the batting order, and that’s it.

Thanks to John Titchener for standing in for Mike Hart today.

There are a few early morning scullers around, but the river is pretty quiet still, and the rain holds off to deliberately thwart the forecasters.

12.45  27 miles later and we arrive back at DSPC.  A good training outing, and our first timed session through the locks.  Pretty good results too.  Up to 8.6 mph with the wind and stream, generally 7+ mph into the wind. But we are all fairly fresh so it is easier to work harder and put in the power against the wind. Even so those are good times, and we taken the times to get through each of these locks. Another part of the planning is in place.

Chris Millward

Chris is the Financial Controller for National Boat Shows Ltd. Generally very quiet and mild mannered, but he seems to undergo a personality transformation when in a boat, which leads to high class results but erratic means. Keen to make an impression at record setting. We’re keeping our eyes on that.

Notable achievements:
